PRESERVING NATURAL HERITAGE

SÓTANO DEL BARRO

The community of Santa María de Cocos at the Sierra Gorda Queretana, México.

This is Don Sotero, and the land he takes care of day and night to preserve it.

This place serves the natural habitat for the Green Guacamaya, an endemic species of the area. As well as a natural habitat for pumas, wild boar, and hawk.

This community shares a recent concern for the ecosystem their families own to this day, which were passed on by generations.

They now understand that preserving their ecosystem is crucial for their lives, in which they receive economical, social, and cultural benefits.

Furthermore, the plants they can find in this area have served the community for medicinal and cooking purposes.
